I’ve just come across an interesting and well executed project over on the Behance network which has inspired me to work towards developing a minimalist typeface where as much of the letter form is lost leaving only the bare minimum in order for it to still be readable and recognisable.

Experimentation into word abbevistion and letter simplification.20111122-042350.jpg

for this short project i am removing parts of each letter to experiment with how much can be removed whilst still retaining legibility. 20111122-042400.jpg

I am currently creating this vector on illustrator before laser cutting it into a woodblock and letter pressing it later this week! Can’t wait to see the results.20111122-042410.jpg

One of the things I am researching for this project is the Ampersand (&).
This is a very common abbreviation symbol for the word ‘and’ and is one of the few characters in a typeface where designers really tend to explore the form. 20111122-041543.jpg
I have
Been working on a short book which contains information on the history of the ampersand, some of the best ampersands from popular typefaces, ampersand photographs from the street and finally some experimental ampersands drawn by myself as well as Bristol based designers Tom Lane and Ged Palmer.

This is the final year project of UWE graphic design student Pete Adams. This blog is a place for me to collate my ideas and work as well as integrate research and projects with other people.

The project is a self directed brief which aims to explore the ways in which we condense information.
